For me, tracks two and five are most promising. The jazz/upbeat bluesy or country twang suits her and is therefore the most enjoyable by far. The other tracks indicate a willingness to sing for a slightly different audience – perhaps a more Mumsy one. This is an enjoyable debut EP from a girl with a canny sense for hooks to draw in the listener but at the same time a potential for going down a less enjoyable more generic road It may be worth looking up Descarga (her Latin band who have released an album recently) after hearing this It may show a greater depth, however on this evidence, Almeida could well grow as an artist and I imagine we’ll be hearing more from her, particularly with a diary hectic with summer festivals including Glastonbury and Dot to Dot.

When Damien DeRose turned eighteen, he dropped out of school, packed up his guitar, and bought a sailboat in California with a friend. The plan was to sail down the coast and let the wind dictate the pace. However, life took a different course and while the ship may not have left the harbour, DeRose found himself on a new journey, writing and travelling across the US and Europe. A captivating home-recorded debut was released - "Fear Not Distant Lover", a collection of delicately lo-fi folk/pop songs, and Peasant became the moniker. In 2008, Peasant signed with Paper Garden Records, released his first studio album entitled, "On The Ground', had many US shows feature his songs and toured the world sharing the stage with Cursive, Delta Spirit and Deer Tick playing at South By Southwest and the Montreal Pop Fest Released in the UK and Ireland in 2009, the album reaped rich praise.
In 2008 Scouting For Girls became the biggest selling new British band of the year. Having toiled for ten years unsigned, the boys sold over 900,000 records of their eponymous number 1 debut album, and were nominated for three Brit Awards (British Breakthrough Act, British Single and British Live Act) to become the UK’s most successful new pop band.Fronted by exuberant showman Roy Stride, Scouting For Girls quickly became renowned for their contagious piano-led pop songs (She’s So Lovely, Heartbeat, It’s Not About You), that connected with a huge audience and reaped multiple sell-out tours Those live shows grew as Scouting For Girls mania gripped, buoyed on by huge radio support, and venues were upsized across the country and sold out just as quickly By the end of 2008, they had performed to hundreds of thousands of fans, and outsold bands twice their size in the live arena.
'DeRose’s vocals float above acoustic guitar melodies, evoking the lyrical eloquence and delicate arrangements of Rogue Wave and the late Elliott Smith.' - Magnet MagazineWhile this new album 'Shady Retreat’, was recorded in several locales, DeRose spent the majority of his time in the attic of a 200-year-old farmhouse The record collates together the techniques DeRose learned in the studio for 'On The Ground', while staying true to his DIY beginnings It's a gorgeous and ambitious collection of Peasant's best, most exciting work Sixties-esque guitar and pop songs are embellished with layered harmonies and synths, as Peasant sings his dreamy lyrics with his usual conviction.

The third wave of mod culture is already upon us. The Who played this year’s Super Bowl and revisited their classic Quadrophenia soundtrack, reproducing the album in its entirety during a live performance at the Albert Hall and this Autumn also sees the eagerly awaited remake of the iconic British movie Brighton Rock. Starring Sam Riley, Pete Postlethwaite and Helen Mirren, this rewritten interpretation brings the story forward into the 60s and features legions of mods, an assembly of scooters and of course, their music. Fred Perry and Ben Sherman are releasing their new mod fashion ranges and Paul Weller (The Modfather) of featured band The Jam was recently crowned a God Like Genius at this year’s NME Awards. Last year’s Ska Mania has sold over 150,000 copies and Mod Mania is also set for mass appeal to the in crowd. You may not have to worry about the threat of rockers and police anymore, but the music lives on It’s time to rev up that Lambretta and get ready for Mod Mania.
The initial recordings of their forthcoming second album Everybody Wants To Be On TV were ruthlessly scrapped after the Brit Awards in 2008, when the band decided it needed re-writing and re-shaping. Whole tracks were dropped in Roy Stride’s mission for a collection of perfect pop songs. The resulting album, produced by Andy Green at Helioscentric Studios in East Sussex, is unshakeably bold and confident, a genuine step up in sound that loses none of the band’s early charm but builds and expands upon it as infectiously as only they know how to be.This Ain’t A Love Song is a telling introduction to the new record It is a hugely powerful, soaring song and a strong example of Scouting For Girls’ ambitious new sound, sculpted by Roy’s unflagging confidence and songwriting prowess.
Opening with the lyrically bleak but musically uplifting single, 'Cardiac Arrest’ and moving swiftly on to the genius of 'Shut Up’, a Madness single that remains a huge live favourite with all, including those not even born on its release, 'Seven’ also features a third single in the shape of 'Grey Day’, an eerie dub masterpiece that belies the caricature of the band as perpetually nutty dancing through the decade. Of course, this being Madness, the video (also included) features nutty dancing. As with previous album, 'Absolutely’ and those to come after 'Seven’, Madness had now developed a finely honed instinct for blending humour and bathos, seeing the good in the bad and vice versa whilst musically their palette could encompass the starting points of ska but also music hall, dub, rockabilly, latino and pretty much any other style that fitted. This reissue also includes the single version of 'It Must Be Love’, another classic Madness single, for some the classic Madness single and a stand alone release around the time of the album. Also included are the videos for all four singles and a host of B sides, sessions and live tracks that give the complete picture of this era of Madness’ amazing musical story. The two cd set comes with full original artwork, lyrics for all tracks and a foreword by David Quantick to set the scene for what he regards as 'the album where Madness stopped being Madness, the North London ska ban, and became Madness, the ultimate British pop group of the '80’s’.Enter now and you and a friend could be propelled to Beach Break heaven and enjoy 5 days of sunshine, music and dancing courtesy of your student rag So dust off your tent, unravel that beach mat and make sure you don’t miss your chance to be part of the greatest Beach Break Live yet!.

Since Disturbia Clothing was founded in 2003, it has grown into a behemoth of alternative fashion. Worn by the likes of Guns N Roses’ axeman Slash as well as Liam Howlett of The Prodigy, it now proudly supplies over 150 stores across Europe with its bold 're-evaluations of the everyday world’.Created by fashion graduate Frank Major, as an outlet for his anarchic musings, the art of Disturbia is inspired by a love of subverting pop culture imagery coupled with fitting wordplay, and an underlying dark sense of humour. Initially creating all the designs himself, of late Disturbia has painstakingly sought out the best alternative artists to give each collection a mutli-faceted appeal. Last year Frank also designed 3 exclusive limited edition t shirts for The Prodigy which sold out within a matter of days. Talking of his creations, Major says;"With the simple philosophy 'Disturb the Suburbs', our graphics darkly re-evaluate the everyday world Familiar signs and modern semiotics are warped, deconstructed and reassembled, changing their context to reveal an alternative truth With an irreverent humour and a punk ethos, our graphics bastardise pop-culture imagery, to reflect our material world".
Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. 'It turned out amazingly well, but I didn’t want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of non-classical music.'It was not all classical however On their breathtaking interpretation of 'Put A Spell On You' Beck’s sublime guitar duets and dovetails seamlessly with Joss Stone’s unique vocal.
Having first seen Idlewild at one of the final gigs to be played at the Hammersmith Palais quite a few years back, Rod shared some of his memorable gig experiences, including Sonic Youth at the Barrowlands and Bruce Springsteen at Old Trafford; before deciding that a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young gig in their home town would top the list of favourites, were it to occur. The question followed on from an interview I held with Scott from Frightened Rabbit earlier this year, when the frontman claimed that seeing Idlewild at the Barrowlands would be his top choice. Rod revealed his close relationship with F. Rabbit, and said that Scottish bands tend to get on extremely well with each other, acting very supportively; something which he felt was a clear difference between the Scottish and English music scenes.Various online posts and blogs from the band stress the importance that they place in local record shops, and this was something we chatted about for a while. Rod simply felt that the concept of the 'album’ is dying out fast, and that the internet holds a great responsibility for this. A way that both the band (with Post Electric Blues) and Rod on his solo album (A Sentimental Education) have tried to address this issue, is by offering fans the opportunity to have their name in the album sleeve once they pre-order the record. In theory, Rod thought this would bring music fans back to the days when they would 'anticipate’ the release of an album, because they had a level of commitment towards it. Rod also commented that the impact of the internet these days meant that looking for good music is like looking for a 'needle in a hayfield, rather than a haystack that it used to be like’.Having flirted with considerable levels of fame around the release of 'The Remote Part’ in 2002 (entering the charts at #3 behind the Chili Peppers and Oasis), the non-rock music fan was exposed to their music chiefly through top ten single 'You Held The World In Your Arms’ making an appearance on the soundtrack to FIFA 2003 Since 'Hope Is Important’ was released 12 years ago, an album that Rod 'cringes’ when he listens to now, the band have matured quite drastically from being a youthful outfit with a punk feel, to one that still knows how to thrash out a rock song, whilst producing the poetic and atmospheric number too Rod compared the relationship between himself and Roddy (vocalist) to a 'marriage’, which, together with new band members in the past few years (Allan Stewart-guitar, Gareth Russell-bass), was the reasoning behind the more collective song writing process on the recent record 'It’s quicker to write a song for your solo album, but it takes longer to be happy with it,this (solo) record took me 2 years to write’ Despite this, Rod revealed that he’d love to get another 2 solo albums out within the year.
Michael Canitrot started his career in throwing parties at a young age, 'I was 17 when I did my first party at les Bains-Douches, but it was a secret I wasn’t old enough to be inside'. Ten years later the event has grown in the city’s best known party, attended by music lovers, beautiful girls, fashion addicts, artists and people who just want to have fun.It is from this party that Michael crafted his musical style, a style that lends itself to the catwalks and cocktail parties as well as the dance floor. His style is an eclectic, rhythmic and melodic blend of House, Afros, Latinos, Classics and Disco. He is the resident DJ at Mezzanine De L’Alcazar, the Conran designed restaurant and one of the main social hubs of the city. He is also the sound director of some of the world’s best known fashion labels such as Dior, Cartier, Versace, D&G and Prada, all of whom call upon him to program their powerful catwalk soundtracks.Michael Canitrot has carefully put all of his experience in designing the sound of his events and fashion shows into his debut compilation 'So, Happy In Paris? By Michael Canitrot’, a sublime and beautiful eclectic mix set Each CD is specially compiled and arranged to be played at any social occasion The first CD is typical of what Michael would play at fashion shows or on the red carpet in Cannes, an eclectic selection of Electronic, Pop, Rock and Deep grooves.

Rock mayhem kicked off with Scottish band The Vivians who, fronted by Damon deVille, provided the perfect support slot with an edgy rock sound that, just like the band, is full of attitude! Then it was time for the main act, with Sylvain Sylvain first to enter the stage, followed by the remaining Dolls. The opening number was 'Looking For A Kiss’ and straight away the crowd went with the rhythm. Next was 'Cauze I Sez So’ – the title song from their acclaimed and Todd Rundgren-produced album. This was followed by 'We’re All In Love’ and the audience no doubt were in love with the band’s energetic stage frolics Guitarist Steve Conte in particular worked his instrument as if his life depended on it, while frontman David Johansen clearly enjoyed giving his all for an appreciative London crowd.
Dead Sea Souls have a really strong sound, hitting better beats and catchier rhythms than Parka, The Fratellis or The View. You can see that their music was written to be played live; with sing-a-long choruses, lots of da-da-da-da-ing and upbeat chirpy tunes. The band perform in a cocoon of fun, flirtatious pop, with contagiously cheeky grins and dancing fans. Performing a 45-minute set, Dead Sea Souls do more than just support Stornoway, they put on a completely banging set for the King Tuts crowd this evening. The Sex Pistol Experience expertly and authentically awoke 50 plus year old ex punks from their accountancy day jobs and respectable family lives, and propelled them 33 years in the past to relive their glorious 'orrible youth. Balding middle-aged men found enough strands to spike up in a statement to their musically anarchic hay-day. And some of them found an energy within that may have laid dormant for decades. They were seventeen again, pogo-ing to the tight, raw, snarling rock 'n’ roll of their yester-heroes. The younger members of the audience were as enthusiastic as their elders - age was no barrier to having a riotously good time.Leeds’ own Clash tributers Rebel Truce warmed the crowd with an exciting early years set that began with the explosive Give 'em Enough Rope album opener, Safe European Home, and ended with Clash City Rockers In between they belted out suitably charged versions including Career Opportunities, Stay Free, and London’s Burning Brand New Cadillac aside, they avoided venturing beyond the first two albums to capture a sense of time and place.
